According to Hinduism, Chandraghanta is the third incarnation of Goddess Durga. Chandraghanta means the one who wears the bell-shaped moon on her head and the third eye of Chandraghante is open and she looks like she is ready to suppress the evil spirits at any time. Chandra Ghanta is also known as Chandrika, Ranchandi. She has ten hands and holds a weapon in each of her hands and dances as a lioness.

Significance of Chandraghanta:

Chandraghante is the deity of planet Venus. Chandraghante is the mother who gives happiness to all beings on earth. Her worship brings wealth and prosperity.


Mythical story of Chandraghante:

Goddess Durga is shown in the newly married form of Chandraghanta. Born as the daughter of Himavanta and Maina Devi, Parvati undertakes severe penance to attain Lord Shiva. Shiva, impressed by Parvati's austere penance, agrees to marry her. Like this, the marriage arrangements take place in Himavanana Palace.

Siva, the graveyard dweller, in his terrible form, arrives at the palace in procession with his ganas. Parvati's mother faints at the sight of the ash-covered body, snakes around the neck, the knotted Jatedhari Shiva, accompanied by demons, ghouls, ganas, sages, aghoris, and a strange procession. Those attending the wedding are shocked to see Shiva's form and his ganas. Seeing this, Parvati transforms into a moon bell in a terrifying form so as not to embarrass Shiva.

Chandra Ghanta, who had a golden complexion, had ten arms. In nine arms she holds a trident, a mace, a bow and arrow, a sword, a lotus, a bell, a bell, and in one arm she bears the seal of Abhaya, a lioness. Adi Shakti is compassionate to her devotees like a mother. And she appears in a terrible form to the bad guys.

Parvati, in the form of Chandraghante, disguises herself as a handsome groom for Shiva. Agreeing to Parvati's words, Lord Shiva appears in a beautiful form, adorned with jewels. The marriage of Shiva and Parvati is consummated. Thus, the day Shiva and Parvati got married is celebrated as Mahashivaratri every year.


In case of marriage:

On the occasion of marriage Goddess Parvati performs severe penance and succeeds in marrying Lord Shiva. Shiva enters Parvati's palace with the Ganas of Kailasa on the occasion of the wedding. Goddess Parvati's mother faints at the sight of Shiva, who looks so terrifying. Then Parvati appears before Shiva in the form of Chandraghanta and requests Shiva to take the form of a prince. Thus Shiva's marriage to Parvati takes place after Shiva takes the form of a handsome groom.


In order to defeat the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, Goddess Parvati incarnates as Kaushiki. Kaushiki's very form was a sign of the destruction of Rakshasas. Shumbha, who plans to marry his brother Nishumbha, sends a demon called Dhumralochana to fetch her. When Kaushiki disagrees and Dhumralochana attacks, the enraged mother Kaushiki kills Dhumralochana with a mere 'hoomkara'.


Thousands of Asuras were annihilated by the ringing of the moon bell, which was always ready to slay the wicked. By her grace, all the sins, hardships, physical pain and mental problems of the devotees are removed. Simhavahiniya She instills fearlessness in the devotees.
