Her story is a testament to the power of one individual's determination to make a positive impact on the environment.

Thimmakka was born in a small village called Gubbi in the state of Karnataka, India, in 1910. She had a humble upbringing and faced many challenges in her early life. Thimmakka and her husband, Chikkaiah, were unable to have children. This led to social stigma and disappointment, but it also meant they had more lifetime and energy to focus on other aspects of their lives.

In the early 1950s, Thimmakka and her husband started planting banyan saplings along a 4-kilometer stretch of road near their village. This barren stretch of land lacked trees and greenery. They undertook this initiative with the hope of creating shade and shelter for travelers.

They cared for the saplings like their own children, regularly watering and tending to them. Over the years, their efforts gained attention and recognition. People began to appreciate the green canopy of banyan trees that lined the once-arid road. The couple's work helped reduce soil erosion and provided a respite from the harsh sun for travelers.
